The Whine That Changes With Engine Speed

If your car stereo has a high-pitched whining noise that gets higher as you accelerate, you have alternator whine — one of the most common car audio problems. It's an electrical noise, not a speaker problem, and it means your audio system is picking up interference from your vehicle's electrical system.

What Causes It

Alternator whine happens when your audio system's power and signal paths aren't properly isolated. The most common causes:

• Ground loop: Your amp and head unit are grounded at different points, creating a loop that picks up noise
• Poor ground connection: A loose, corroded, or painted-over ground point has high resistance
• Signal cables too close to power cables: RCA cables running next to power wires pick up interference
• Cheap RCA cables: Unshielded cables act like antennas for electrical noise

How to Fix It

1. Check your grounds. The most common fix. Make sure your amplifier's ground wire is bolted to bare metal — not painted, not over a gasket, not to a seat bolt. Scrape the paint off, bolt it down tight.

2. Reroute your cables. Run your RCA/signal cables down the opposite side of the vehicle from your power wire. They should never run parallel and close together.

3. Use a ground loop isolator. If the noise persists, a ground loop isolator on the RCA lines can break the loop and kill the noise.

4. Upgrade your RCA cables. Shielded, quality cables reject interference that cheap cables let through.

When It's Not Alternator Whine

If the noise is a constant hiss (not RPM-dependent), it's usually a gain setting or a noisy component. If it's a pop when you turn the system on, it's a turn-on/off thump — a turn-on delay module fixes it.
